Red Sovine was born Woodrow Wilson Sovine on July 7, 1917. He died in 1980 when he had a heart attack at the wheel of his truck. He drove through an intersection and hit a car before colliding with a tree. It’s said he still haunts the road he died on*.
*Not really
Happy Halloween, Oppo!

Thanks! a Blast From The Past.
He had a broader catalog-- but was only known for this song.

Somehow, despite having loved the Tom Waits version of this song for 30-something years, I’d never bothered to check out the original. Good stuff, but I have a feeling that in 1987, I would have found it “too country”. ( M y 17 year-old self would likely be utterly horrified at how much twang my library includes now - not tons that I consider country, but from the acoustic folk/Americana/rootsy part of the musical spectrum, which owes much to classic country music from immediately post-WWII right up to about 1980 or so.)
1975 's Nighthawks at the Diner , where this is found, is still one of my favorite albums - a desert island disc, if you will.
